yeah, my actual code is like this now:

stats = {
                  ...stats,
                  [deviceType]: {
                    ...stats?.[deviceType],
                    // etc
                  }
                }

stats = {
                  ...stats,
                  [deviceType]: {
                    ...stats?.[deviceType],
                    // etc
                  }
                }

ah, thanks. i'd still want to preserve any other values, but can use optional chaining with destructuring i believe
